I'm not sure how to describe today's race, I've drawn my route on the map below. For starters, I fudged controls no 2 and no 3. Eugene, who started 6 minutes behind me, had already caught me at this point, which was a little sooner than I expected. I was fairly accurate on most of the other controls, mainly a little off with my direction by about 20 to 30 meters at the most, but easy to correct once close to the control.
I knew my fitness was worse than ever before going into the western cape orienteering champs this year, but I didn't expect to suffer this badly. My calves were hurting most of the way, and I was walking bits by no 4, way too early in the race. But, even worse than that, I don't really remember what I was doing during the race, I know my route, but I can't remember looking at the map. Something just doesn't "feel right" at the moment, but I haven't figured out what it is. I'm a little worried.
Anyway, tomorrow's long distance event is going to be double today's distance, with three times the climb, so I've decided I'll just be taking a easy jog, no racing. Rather safe than sorry, I think.
