I had a absolutely dreadful race today. The event was similar to a score event, in that you could collect the controls in any order you wanted to, but you had to get all controls.
My first control went really well, I took a shortcut that almost everybody else missed, but, I completely stuffed up no 2. I'm still not sure where I went wrong, or what I was thinking. I should have just stuck to the roads in stead of trying to take a shortcut through the (dark) green. I lost 25 to 30 minutes fighting through very dense fynbos, and getting completely lost. By the time I emerged from the mistake, I was pretty much where I started (on the map) only very tired and scratched.
I had to really work hard not to quit at this point, and to at least finish the first map. But I just couldn't continue on the second map, my head and legs had lost the battle.
The only other note worthy incident, was at no 4, as I punched the control, I looked to me left, and less that 1.5 meters away from me there's this big (yellow?) cobra, hissing, with it's head up and everything. I waited a few seconds for it to retreat into the bush before I turned and ran. This is the second cobra I've come across at an orienteering event in the Cape, which makes me a little nervous.
The second map, which I never got to do...
