I had a fairly clean race this evening. I struggled a little to find the first control, because there where a lot of stairs and passages in the area, which I couldn't notice on the map. I almost missed control 11 because I was chasing two other runners. And I enjoyed the tricky section from 14 to 17 very much.
I read an old race report on Thierry Gueorgiou's web site, and noticed that he's always looking for the biggest, most obvious feature close to the control, and then uses that to "guide" him into the control. I realised that I never do that. I'm always looking at the small details of the map, which obviously wastes a lot of time, and causes a lot of errors. In the last two races I've been practising looking for the big features, and I have definitely noticed an improvement in my orienteering, even if these events are simple park events.
